| These rifles came
into being following the imposition of the Treaty of Versailles upon
post-WWI Germany. The greatly-reduced armed forces of the Weimar Republic
were under strict regulations severely limiting the production of military
ammunition, making it difficult to conduct sufficient rifle training to
keep troop marksmanship at acceptable levels.

| The answer to this
dilemma came in the form of the Kleinkaliber-Wehrsportgewehr, or
'Small-Calibre Military and Sporting Rifle' as manufactured by several
prominent German armouries of the time (ours were made by Mauser/Oberndorf,
1934-39).
Manufactured to resemble and function as closely to the Kar98k
as possible, these were exempt from the provisions of the Versailles
Treaty because they were chambered for the .22 long rifle cartridge. All our KKW rifles exhibit the
superior pre-war European craftsmanship
for which Mauser were famous.

As
production lines were fully given over to manufacturing full bore K-98s
during rearmament and particularly following the commencement of
hostilities, manufacture of the KKW was halted prior to the start of WWII. |

| We
uncovered a precious few of these rifles in our European warehouse.
They were carefully stored in grease, packed in wooden crates, and
left in a forgotten corner of the armoury where we found them
decades later. These are the only KKW rifles we have: once they're
gone, we don't have a ready source for more (please note that since
this article was first written our small stock of KKW rifles has
sold out) . |
