These little 'snap caps' are far more useful than many shooters might think. Quite a lot of wear on a firearm's action is caused by "dry firing" or pulling the trigger on an empty chamber to de-cock the firearm's action. Most firearms have no convenient means of releasing the action without dry firing, which is known to cause undue stress on some of your firearm's vital components such as its firing pin.

Snap caps for center fire guns alleviate this problem by placing an inert spring-loaded brass cup in front of your firearm's firing pin, thus slowing its forward movement in the same way a cartridge's primer would. Rimfire snap caps (ie. .22 LR) accomplish this through use of ABS rimmed snap caps. Either way, without this "cushion" effect the firing pin slams against other parts of the firearm's action with overly much force, which can lead to breakage.

Fortunately 'snap caps' alleviate the problem of excess stress on the actions of firearms even for those shooters and competitors who improve their skills through frequent dry fire practice. Simply slip a 'snap cap' into the chamber before closing the action and dry fire normally. Problem solved! These are a must for fine tuning the triggers and cartridge feed mechanisms of valuable, custom, and match guns. Also useful for demonstration and for teaching firearms safety as these cannot be mistaken for real cartridges.
