Every
so often in the annals of armed conflict the right tool for the
right job surfaces at exactly the time it is most needed. The
Soviets, like the British, found themselves woefully under armed
and largely unprepared for the onslaught of the Third Reich.
|
|
|
|
As
happened with the British and their ingenious if rudimentary
STEN gun, the Soviets came up with so simple and robust a design
for an SMG that the PPSH 41 proved quite capable of
enduring Russia's harsh climactic conditions and being cared for
by a poorly trained conscript (this last comment regarding
training of the time enhances rather than denigrates both the
plight and subsequent heroism of the Russian conscripts
defending their motherland)..
|
|
|
|
The
PPSH was a close quarters urban combat weapon par excellence,
able to provide withering covering fire for house-clearing
operations in the street fighting of Leningrad, Stalingrad, and
innumerable other battles. After playing a significant role in
the liberation of the Soviet Union from the fascist invaders,
this gun turned up in places like Korea, Cambodia, and Viet Nam
by the thousands.
