These
are without a doubt the most easily recognized rifles of the 20th
century, having first become infamous as the weapon of 'Charlie'
in Vietnam and subsequently associated with communist regimes
and terrorism (mainly because almost every North American
military force and law enforcement tactical team is armed with
AR-15 pattern rifles in marked contrast with those forces who
are issued kalashnikovs). Most members of the general public can
identify an 'AK' on sight.
|
|
|
|
Public
perceptions not withstanding, the Kalashnikov still ranks
amongst the most effective, economical, simple to operate, and
robust rifle ever devised. These, manufactured by the Zastava
State Arsenal in the former Yugoslavia, are arguably the
best-made military rifles of this type available. They have also
garnered media attention as the weapon of choice throughout the
recent conflicts in the Balkans.
|
|
|
|
The
ubiquitous AKM pattern rifle rightly deserves its place in any
20th century military small arms exhibit. It is also the
undisputed favourite for use in any type of quasi-modern action
movie as this rifle can be encountered in literally any of the
world's 'hot spots' from Afghanistan to the mean streets of an
inner city ghetto.
