1897 Pump Action Shotgun

The advent of fast-firing repeating revolvers and long arms which followed the invention of the modern cartridge in the late 1800's inevitably gave rise to a huge demand for repeating shotguns as well. Winchester, well-known then (as now) for their well-balanced and reliable lever action rifles, developed the model 1897 in response to the demand for a repeating shotgun built tough enough to withstand the pressure of the then new smokeless powder shotgun shells. The resulting gun, of which more than a million were produced before production ceased in 1957, is the most popular and well-built exposed hammer pump gun ever produced. The 20" barreled 'riot gun' long favoured by American lawmen from the late 19th century through the 1950's.
