ArmiSport Civil War Rifled Muskets (of Southern manufacture)
Civil War Rifled Muskets (originally of Southern manufacture)
These rifles, together with the earlier issue
U.S. 1842 Pattern Musket,
British made
1853 Enfield 3-band rifle, and British 1858 Enfield
2-band naval pattern rifle, were issued to the confederate army during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
While the aforementioned long arms (and many other models, as was the case on both sides) saw service during the
war, this page is reserved for rifled muskets produced by the South during the conflict.
Richmond Rifled Musket
Sometimes called ‘hump backs’ due to the distinctive raised portion of the lock plate, these .58 calibre muskets
were produced after the Richmond armory was taken over by the Confederate army. The dies used to produce the
lock plates, which were originally for the
1855 U.S. Percussion Rifle
and were captured from Harpers Ferry in April of 1861, included the ‘hump’ meant for mounting the Maynard ‘tape’
primer system - a feature that was dispensed with when the Richmond muskets were manufactured. More Richmond type
rifled muskets were produced than any other long arm made in the Confederate states.
Armi Sport 1862 C.S. Richmond Rifled Musket
This ‘hump back’ musket is a faithful reproduction of the rifle that saw service in the South during the War of Northern
Aggression. Fitted with a hand rubbed oil finish walnut stock, one piece forged barrel, and solid brass buttplate and
nose cap, this reproduction is accurate down to the lock plate markings (‘1862’ to the left of the hammer and ‘C.S.
RICHMOND,VA’to the right). Even the breech is appropriately marked with ‘VP’ and ‘eagle head’ stamps.
