ArmiSport Civil War Rifled Muskets (of Northern manufacture)
Civil War Rifled Muskets (originally of Northern manufacture)
These rifles, together with the earlier issue
U.S. 1842 Pattern Muskets,
British built
1853 Enfield 3-band rifle and
1858 Enfield 2-band naval pattern rifle, were issued to the federal
army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The three rifles shown here differ from the aforementioned long
arms in that they were produced in the Northern U.S. during the conflict (the 1855 Pattern ceased production in 1861).
U.S. Model 1855 Percussion Rifle
This was the first regulation U.S. military musket to fire the .58 calibre Minie bullet and also employed the Maynard
primer system (please note both the original and our Armi Sport reproduction employ standard percussion caps, the
latter’s Maynard system being non-functional though its door does open and close like the original). Just under 60,000
of these rifled muskets were produced.
1861 Springfield Rifled Musket
This was the mainstay of the Union army during the Civil War and served as the ‘pattern gun’ for all subsequent wartime
designs. Among the design changes from the 1855 Percussion Rifle was the elimination of the troublesome Maynard primer
system, which was deemed impractical for combat use. Over one million were produced by Springfield Armory and other
contractors.
1863 Remington Zouave Rifled Musket and Zouave Carbine
This was the last muzzle loading infantry musket design to enter production during the Civil War and also the last such
long arm to be officially adopted by the U.S. army. Though neither the first shipment of 10,001 rifles to leave Remington
on April 18, 1863 nor any subsequent production runs were ever issued to Zouave regiments the name stuck regardless. Over
half a million were produced.
