1865-66 Remington¹ Rolling Block Rifles
The Remington-Rider
¹ rolling block action was the result of a developmental process which began
with the 1863 patent of a rotating block metallic cartridge-firing breech loading rifle by Leonard
Geiger, a Remington
¹ Employee. After undergoing some initial modifications 20,000 Remington
¹ 'Split
Breech' carbines were manufactured for the union army in 1864 and 1865. The 1865-66 'Rolling Block'
action was a further refinement of the Split Breech design and though rifles of this type saw use by
many armies until the widespread adoption of bolt action repeating rifles, these rifles are most
famous for their use during the bison hunts and throughout the old West.
