Colt 1878 Double Breech Loading Rifle
Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Sporting Rifle (1878-1879)
Based upon the Colt double-barreled shotgun in production at that time, the double-
barreled Colt rifle was the brainchild of Caldwell Colt, son of Colonel Colt, who
believed his company could produce a rifle of high enough quality to rival the very
best handmade sporting rifles and shotguns from England's top gun makers. lavish
hand checkering and finishing and the finest materials went into the original rifles,
of which less than forty were made before they were discontinued in 1879. Original
Colt 1878 double rifles are considered one of the ultimate collectible Colts of the
latter 19th century and command prices which ensure they will never be seen outside a
museum, vault, or display case - a pity given how perfectly suited these big bore
rifles are for hunting!
