Though these were primarily used by the union army many were captured and pressed into service by the confederate army, which suffered from a chronic shortage of arms due to lack of a domestic arms industry. Others were captured at Harper's Ferry therefore it is feasible for the 1861 Springfield rifle to have been in the hands of a rebel soldier very early in the war.
Davide Pedersoli's 1861 Springfield musket is the finest Civil War reproduction long arm in production today. The fine fit and finish of these rifles (prevalent throughout Pedersoli's offerings) is immediately apparent and leaves nothing to be desired insofar as quality is concerned. Many enthusiasts and re-enactors tell of trying the rest before buying a Pedersoli: why not save yourself the trouble by starting with the best?
