The Colt 1861 Navy model was like its predecessor (the 1851 Navy) called 'the navy model' as part of Colonel Samuel Colt's ingenious marketing strategy and was not indicative of which branch of the American armed forces used them. This model, which is essentially an external rework of the venerable Colt 1851 Navy, was given the same streamlined profile and improved loading lever of the legendary Colt 1860 Army revolver, the latter widely regarded to be the ultimate single action black power military pistol. The result was a revolving percussion pistol whose balance, handling, and ease of aim was second to none. Though far fewer Colt 1861 Navy .36 calibre revolvers were made than the ubiquitous 1851 Navy pattern guns, Colt's '61 Navy became a favourite of high-ranking Union officers who purchased their own pistols - or who were fortunate enough to be presented an 1861 Navy 'with the compliments of Colonel Colt.

Though the original revolvers are comparatively rare and consequently expensive, our Pietta 1861 Navy percussion pistols by Pietta are an excellent alternative for collectors and shooters alike. Each is precision made on the latest computer-controlled machinery before being hand assembled, fitted, and finished by European craftsmen - the ultimate marriage of technology and Old World tradition.
