1856 LeMat & Girard Black Powder Revolvers

1862 Police

LeMat & Girard's Patent Pistol

Originally patented in 1856 by a French-born aristocrat who designed firearms as a hobby, this unusual and distinctive revolver featured a nine-shot cylinder whose axis pin was a smoothbore shotgun barrel for firing grapeshot. Jean Alexandre François Le Mat, from whose surname his invention was named, submitted his unique revolver to the U.S. army but did not succeed in generating any interest until the outbreak of hostilities between North and South. The Confederate government saw the value of LeMat's invention, drew up a contract for 5,000 revolvers, and offered him the rank of Colonel.

Colonel LeMat soon experienced the difficulties encountered by anyone attempting to manufacture ordnance in the South during the war: the near-critical shortages of raw materials, manpower, and machinery which plagued the Confederacy from the start, together with the comparative complexity of his design, soon had LeMat looking for a factory in his native France to produce his pistols. Unfortunately the first French made revolvers produced by Charles Frederic Girard and Son of Paris were of such poor quality that they contracted the Birmingham Small Arms Company of England to make them instead. The latter proved satisfactory, with approximately 3,000 units successfully delivered to the Confederacy through the federal blockade before the cessation of hostilities.

Pietta's finely crafted LeMat series finally puts this unique and historic revolver within reach of the majority of collectors and shooters for whom the price of an original is far too high. Better yet, these revolvers are manufactured with modern steel on precision CNC machinery before being individually hand assembled, fitted, and finished in the best 'old world' traditions, making these LeMat revolvers every bit as functional as they are appealing. Sure to be a centrepiece of any Civil War enthusiast's collection and/or re-enacting gear!
