Important Notice for Clients of the Videotron ISP

Recently some of our clients, specifically those who use Videotron's internet services (www.videotron.ca), have experienced difficulties contacting us via email. These clients have contacted us by phone asking why we have not responded to their email. If your email address looks like this: yourname@videotron.ca, you may be affected.

The reason some email originating from videotron.ca has gone unanswered is because we have not received it. This is because Videotron's email servers have been blacklisted by an anti-SPAM service for sending SPAM (unsolicited email) messages. Apparently Videotron did not prevent senders of SPAM from using their mail servers, which is why they have been blacklisted. Please read below for further information.

Marstar Canada's ISP (Internet Service Provider) is Storm Internet Services who, along with many large and small ISPs, are a member of M.A.P.S. (Mail Abuse Prevention System, www.mail-abuse.org). M.A.P.S. maintain a blacklist of mail servers that are used to send SPAM messages because this bulk email costs ISPs many millions of dollars in lost bandwidth yearly. Currently a number of Videotron's mail servers are on this blacklist. This means Videotron clients who use these mail servers cannot send mail to any ISP who subscribes to M.A.P.S. (including ours). All email messages originating from a blacklisted server are automatically blocked by any ISP who subscribes to M.A.P.S.

Correspondence between RBL and Videotron including sample of SPAM mail: http://www.mail-abuse.org/cgi-bin/show_listing.cgi?743444

There is a way for Videotron to be removed from this blacklist however Videotron themselves must initiate the process: they may visit the M.A.P.S. web page at www.mail-abuse.org and apply to have themselves removed from the Black Hole List.

We encourage anyone who is experiencing these problems to phone us toll-free with their product enquiries and orders. Those clients of Videotron who are affected are advised to contact their ISP's technical support and ask Videotron to resolve the issue.

We wish to remind those affected by the blacklist Marstar is not the only email recipient who is blocked from receiving their email. The problem is with Videotron's mail servers, not with Marstar's. We strongly recommend those affected contact their ISP.
